At a time of turmoil in my life I had the good fortune to enroll in a Tai Chi class taught by Professor Mitch Goldfarb at West Chester University in West Chester, PA. Professor Goldfarb introduced the class to Cami Walker’s 29-Day Giving Challenge and invited the class to try it as a means of expanding our Tai Chi and mindfulness practice.

Previously, I had felt I was a positive person and no matter what obstacle was placed in front of me I overcame it while easily caring for those around me and those I encountered in my daily life. But as this turmoil slowly overtook me, I slowly placed my focus on it and less on those around me until the balance was shifted and all my energies went into grappling with the strife in my life.

The thought to take a few mindful minutes each day and give to others wasn’t new to me. And it made sense to me. I just hadn’t been practicing it. Accepting the 29-Day Giving Challenge was a gift I gave myself. Each day I gave to another person was a day with a break from my own problems and a day the balance of negativity-to-positivity gradually shifted back to the positive side. My problem hadn’t gone away in the 29 days. I simply had a different mindset to deal with it. The 29-Day Giving Challenge is a way of life. There are days I forget to mindfully give, but luckily something has always triggered my return to the challenge and to the happiness in my life.

Thanks, Sharon. I like what you said--that the problem wasn't changed in 29 days of giving, but that you changed, and that makes all the difference.
