Good Giving Weekly: HALT
January 17, 2018

Greetings 29 Gifts Community,
Welcome to our new givers. Today I travel from Colorado to Nebraska to visit my son, Henry Zane for five days. He lives with my parents in Kimball--a small town in the south western corner of the panhandle. Please send prayers for safe travels. Several of my close friends in 12-step recovery have reminded me of HALT, an acronym that means don't let yourself get too:
Hungry
Angry
Lonely
Tired

This is simple advice. When I am stressed I have no appetite and I lose weight quickly. I have to make myself eat, even if I am not feeling hungry. Low blood sugar is a problem, so I have to eat lots of small meals and snacks. Dark chocolate covered almonds are a recent favorite.

Anger is often the root emotion that fuels anxiety and depression. Freud defined depression as, "anger turned inward." I like to get creative to deal with anger. I walk and practice yoga. I journal, write poems, draw, color, collage and paint. I listen to music and dance.

"Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty," said Mother Teresa. Sometimes I feel lonely when I am surrounded by people. I have to be present to embrace the joys of solitude.

Tiredness limits my ability to cope with life. Fatigue is one of the most disabling symptoms of multiple sclerosis. If I don't rest and sleep enough, my pain levels get out of control. Meditation, reading, hot baths and aromatherapy all help relieve insomnia.
