Good Giving Weekly: GO GRATITUDE
November 16, 2018

Greetings #29Gifts Community,

TRAVELING MERCIES
Welcome if you are new to http://www.29gifts.org or a returning #29Gifts veteran. I am leaving Denver today on a bus to Kimball, Nebraska for one week. Please send prayers for safe travels. I get to spend four days with my son, Henry Zane before he goes with his dad for his family’s week-long combined Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday in Colorado. I will stay in Nebraska for Thanksgiving at my aunt’s home one hour away near Scottsbluff. This is my first trip to Nebraska since August because of my oral surgery and October 30 surgery to remove fibroids and benign polyps from my uterus.

GO GRATITUDE
November is GRATITUDE MONTH. How are you cultivating an ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE? If you stay in a space of giving and gratitude, you attract more of what you want in life. During your #29giftsin29days take notice of at least three things you are grateful for each day. Today I am grateful for my family, friends and fans. Comment and tell me what you are thankful for today.

GRATITUDE ROCKS
Exercise your creativity. Collect rocks of different sizes and paint or draw on them. Include inspiring words and images and www.29gifts.org to help our movement grow. Give your rocks away or leave them places for people to find.

I went to library last week to return an audio book and pick out a new one. A quick dash in and out since I supposed to be picking up 20 crates of milk from an area food bank and delivering it to where I work as the Volunteer Coordinator for a soup kitchen. Since I was in a hurry, I quickly scanned the titles and this title immediately caught my attention. It’s one that I have been meaning to read for some time, so I grabbed it without even thinking about it. I am SO glad I did. Sometimes, we are “directed” by our higher power, and finding this book was meant to be. I knew from the first few lines, that it was EXACTLY what I needed to hear. Just hearing the words lifted my spirits. I have an autoimmune disease, and my current medications have pretty severe side effects that are wreaking havoc on my body, mind, and spirit. The more I listened, the better I have felt. This morning, without even really thinking about it- I gave my first gift. And then a few hours later, on impulse, I gave a second gift, just to be kind. I didn’t get caught up in feeling overly proud of my actions, but felt a quiet, rewarding warmth that filled my heart and soul. I am looking forward to the next 28 days and the joy it brings to the universe. #29daysin2018.

Good Giving Weekly: ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE
November 8, 2018

Greetings #29Gifts Community,

Happy thankful Thursday. November is GRATITUDE MONTH at http://www.29gifts.org. What are you doing to cultivate an ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE? Welcome if you are new or a returning #29Gifts member. If you stay in a space of giving and gratitude, you attract more of what you want in life. During your #29giftsin29days take notice of at least three things you feel grateful for each day. This may be anything from a family member, your health, shelter, or nature. Today I am grateful for my grandparents (who have all passed away). The summer weeks I spent with my grandparents were some of the happiest times of my childhood. Comment on this post and share what you are thankful for today.

TOOTH FAIRY PROGRESS
I saw my Periodontist yesterday for new CT scans and they made impressions. This means we are beginning the process to make my dental implant. I paid the second of four large payments, but need help covering future dental work costs. Are you looking for a simple give today? Give a little (or big) financial gift to help. Some of these funds also help Trooper (my rescue dog) train to be a therapy and service dog. Please give and share this link in the spirit of community!

Hi, Cami! Happy to see the giving continues! I've been feeling low, so figured it was time for a new round of mindful giving. We lost our incredible mother, Anne Meyer, at 94 on September 14. I am so very grateful to have been raised by such a giving, loving, family-centered woman and to have known her as a mother and a friend. She was a member of 29 Gifts years ago, as well, as you may remember. This round is for Mom.

Good Giving Weekly: GRATITUDE ATTITUDE
November 1, 2018

Greetings #29Gifts Community,

Welcome to November, GRATITUDE MONTH at http://www.29gifts.org. What are you doing to cultivate an ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE? Welcome if you are new or a seasoned #29Gifts member. Do you have questions for me about how to get started, or how to keep your giving groove going after your first cycle of #29giftsin29days? Post your question in the comments and I will reply.

My October 30 surgery did not go as planned. We won’t know for four to six weeks if the steps taken so far will resolve the problems with irregular bleeding, pelvic pain, mood swings and other issues. The doctors were unable to do one of the procedures. The endometrial ablation to remove the lining of my uterus was not possible because my uterus was too small. My surgical team removed fibroids and noncancerous polyps from my uterus and did a D&C (dilation and curettage), a procedure where the opening of the cervix is widened and the uterus lining is scraped.

I am a candidate for a hysterectomy, which is surgery to remove a woman's uterus (the place where a baby grows when a woman is pregnant.) After a hysterectomy, you no longer have menstrual periods and can't become pregnant. Sometimes the surgery also removes the ovaries and fallopian tubes. My tubes are tied so I already can’t get pregnant, something I would NEVER do again anyway. I had so many complications during my pregnancy with my one son, Henry Zane, I couldn’t try again and stay sane and healthy.

I HAVE LEARNED TO MAKE GRATITUDE LISTS IN RECOVERY
Today I AM GRATEFUL my mom came to Denver for my surgery and she stayed at my apartment for three nights. I am also thankful for my friends from church, who made lots of good food for me and my mom, sent me nice cards, and everyone everywhere who prayed for me. I still have some vegetarian chili leftover. My mom was also kind enough to clean my kitchen so it is spotless. She even disinfected the refrigerator and stove inside and out.

Good Giving Weekly: PSYCHIC SHIFT
October 26, 2018

Greetings #29Gifts Community,

Once again the news today is full of fear. A suspect was arrested in the investigation of bombs sent to prominent Democrats and critics of President Trump, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced today. Sometimes fear can be a good motivator, if you can harness the energy and redirect it into something positive and uplifting like art, writing or music.

I have been reading You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero, who is one of my writing mentors. When I got the book deal for 29 Gifts, I was part of a nonfiction book proposal course taught by Jen. If you are a writer looking for guidance, I highly recommend her newsletter, books and other resources. Jen talks a lot about harnessing fear in her books. Learn more at http://www.jensincero.com.

PSYCHIC SHIFT
Welcome new givers and seasoned veterans. I hope your #29Gifts challenge is shifting your thinking. Are you spending your day focused on opportunities to be of service to others? Are you developing your abundance mindset? I find that most days the universe presents many giving possibilities in my path. I just have to say, “YES” and follow through on that impulse to give.

Today my gift was to reach out to several friends from my 12-Step meetings by text and phone because one of our young members passed away. There is collective sadness losing a member of our community who was such a bright light to us all.

Do you have questions for me about how to get started, or how to keep your giving groove going after your first cycle of giving? Post your question in the comments and I will reply.

Are you looking for a simple give? I would appreciate prayers and positive energy for my October 30 surgery. There are other ways you can help me and http://www.29gifts.org.

Good Giving Weekly: LET GO LET GOD
October 24, 2018

Greetings #29Gifts Community,

Welcome if you are new to http://www.29gifts.org or a veteran doing a repeat round of #29Gifts. Check out the flashback article, Giving Prescription, written when the book was launching. It offers some simple giving tips.
http://www.oprah.com/spirit/cami-walkers-29-gifts

LET GO AND LET GOD
The news today is full of reports of terrorist activity. A major criminal investigation has been launched after pipe bombs were sent to the homes of Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, CNN's New York City headquarters and other targets. All of the packages were intercepted by authorities and nobody was hurt. President Trump said yesterday that Saudi Arabian officials had engaged in the “worst cover-up ever” after the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi earlier this month inside its Turkish consulate. These news reports leave me feeling unsettled and scared. I just did a simple kindness meditation to center and focus.

On a personal note, I am preparing for my October 30 surgery. Please send prayers. My biopsy was benign so we are moving forward with removal of fibroids from my uterus, then a D&C (dilation and curettage), a procedure where the opening of the cervix is widened and the lining of the uterus is scraped away. Last they do an endometrial ablation procedure to remove the lining of the uterus. The goal of the surgery to stop or reduce my bleeding. I am ready to let go and let God take over to guide the doctors.

My mom is coming to Denver to stay with me for a few days after the surgery. People from my church are making meals for us. My friends from 12-step meetings are helping me get to the hospital and back. It is nice people care so much.

WHAT "COUNTS" AS A GIFT?
Gifts can be ANYTHING you offer with mindfulness and positive intention. Clean out your closets and give away clothes, shoes, handbags or toys. Give material items, like money or food. Give time, smiles, compliments or simple prayers. Read to your child. Play with your dog. Pet your cat. Pay for someone's coffee or lunch. Don't forget to make write stories or make art about your #29Gifts experience and share them at www.29gifts.org. Do you have other questions for me? Post them in the comments and I will reply.

Good Giving Weekly: BACK TO BASICS
October 16, 2018

Greetings #29Gifts Community,

Welcome if you are new to http://www.29gifts.org. Welcome back if you are a seasoned #29Gifts member. When Medicine Woman Mbali Creazzo originally gave me the #29Gifts Prescription in 2008 I did not start giving right away. I wrote down her suggestion to #Give29Giftsin29Days in my journal, but closed the book and put it away on a high shelf and out of my mind. I had no intention of following through on the idea because I didn’t believe I had anything left to offer the world. I was bankrupt on every level.

I was preparing for a seven-day inpatient psychiatric hospital stay. My new marriage was under serious stress and my freshly diagnosed Multiple Sclerosis (MS) was flaring. I was blind in my right eye, my hands stopped working so I couldn’t write, and I was having problems walking. My mental state was worse than my physical state. I was so unstable that I was suicidal. When I got out of the hospital I went through months of rehab, doing physical and occupational therapy and intensive psychiatric treatment.

Things improved between me and my then husband, Mark, but I still struggled with depression, anxiety, insomnia, and crippling chronic pain. One night I was up at 3 a.m. (again) struggling to put my mind at rest when I reached for my purple handmade journal and opened it right to the page that said, “Give away 29 Gifts in 29 Days.” I recalled my conversation with Mbali and decided to try giving my first gift that morning: a simple phone call to my friend Laurie, who was also living with MS.

BACK TO BASICS: Some advice from Mbali and #29Gifts on how a practice of daily, mindful giving can improve the quality of your life.

Nonattachment: Give your gifts with an open heart, without any expectations about what you might want to receive in return. In fact, try this: What if you were to give away something that you feel you could never part with? It could be a material thing, or perhaps a deeply held belief, behavior, or way of thinking that you feel isn’t serving you anymore. Try this at least once over your 29 Days and take notice of changes you see in your life in upcoming months.

Gratitude: If you stay in a space of giving and gratitude, you attract more of what you want in life. Note at least three things you feel grateful for each day. This may be anything from a family member, your health, shelter, or nature.

Awareness: Decide that you will go through each day being open to opportunities to give. Take action, and be mindful of what comes up for you emotionally. Does it feel hard or easy to give? Can you notice why you are having certain feelings? Is your desire to offer this gift connected to an experience that you remember from your past? Was there some resistance to taking action or resentment after the give?

Service: Try your best to approach offering each gift from an authentic desire to be of service to others. Take note of the times you go out of your way to help another person. What touched you about the person that compelled you to want to give? Are the traits that attracted you to the person somehow mirroring your own experience of life?

Curiosity: Approach this ritual with a willingness to be curious and surprised. Don’t go in
assuming that you will learn something specific, solve a problem, or have an earth-moving experience. Instead, notice what surprises you about your give each day. Did you get an unexpected reaction from the recipient of your gift? Did extending yourself to another person bring up emotions you didn’t anticipate? Did you receive something surprising in return?

Receiving: When you give, it opens space for you to receive. Plus, saying “yes” to the gifts that are offered allows you to feel the joy of giving. Each day, notice if your heart feels open or constricted when you receive an offering from another person. Can you easily accept their gift with gratitude? Do you feel deserving of the gift? Do you give yourself permission to receive with an open heart?

WHAT IF I MISS A DAY OF GIVING?
Simply renew your commitment and start over with Gift 1. Starting over is the suggestion of Mbali Creazzo. Don't stress and don't quit. Starting over does not mean you failed; it is a way release the energy from your giving ritual and allow it to rebuild. I also suggest you sit down with your giving journal and reflect on your day. Was there a moment you offered a gift unconsciously or opportunities you didn't act on? Do you have other questions for me? Post them in the comments and I will reply. Learn more about Mbali at https://ourdivinemedicine.wordpress.com.

CELEBRATING ABUNDANCE
I am proud that millions of people have been exposed to the #29Gifts story. Ten years later, I am still on a mission to revive the worldwide giving spirit. The momentum of the 29 Gifts book launch thrust me into the public eye, but I wasn’t ready to to be famous and live transparently. Here is a link to a story I wrote about this time called You Have To Ride The Waves of Life. Get detail about what happened when Mark and I split up in 2009, a low point for me personally. Thankfully today I can celebrate the abundance in my life.

Remember this October, I encourage you to start each day with gratitude and try giving a gift to yourself. Giving to yourself not only “counts” as part of your #29Gifts–it serves as a reminder that you are worthy of receiving. It increases your sense of abundance and rejuvenates your spirit. Try giving gifts of self care like warm baths, reading, writing a poem or other stress relievers. What kind of gifts will fill your well? Comment to add your own ideas.

Good Giving Weekly: FINDING FAITH
October 7, 2018

Greetings #29Gifts Community,

Welcome new givers at http://www.29gifts.org and those returning for a new round of #29Gifts. I talked a lot about FEAR last week and told some of my own #MeToo moments. Now I want to share some ideas about FAITH, which means complete trust or confidence in someone or something. Many think of faith in a higher power as the central spiritual belief that gives us a sense of purpose. Some of us call our higher power God. When we are acting in alignment with God’s will, life often feels easier.

GIVE IT TO GOD
In addiction recovery, you often hear people say, “I was really twisted up over my complex situation, but I turned it over to my higher power and truly let it go.” The idea that you can give your problems to God is not new, but it is revolutionary for some of us. Most of us want to hold our cards close to our chest and try to control everything; which is a common problem for all of us struggling with some type of addiction. Susie, my 12-step sponsor who has been sober for 41 years, calls this state, “self will run riot.”

Acceptance is also an important piece of the puzzle. A good example from my life includes my October 15th biopsy and October 30th surgery to remove fibroids from my Uterus, do a D&C (dilation and curettage), a procedure where the opening the cervix is widened and the lining of the uterus is scraped away. Last they do an endometrial ablation procedure to remove the lining of the uterus to reduce bleeding.

I can worry myself to death by feeding my fears about the procedures, or make a decision to give myself the gift of turning it over to God and trust that my higher power (and excellent doctors) will have my back.
